More and more doctors and therapists are discovering the beneficial properties of this plant. Smudge bundles are used by many people to connect with the power of Mother Nature.

The practice of burning herbs and resins probably dates back to the time of caves; however, ceremonies to purify people, places, and objects with smoke continue to this day, not only to repel insects, but also because the smoke from certain plants helps to preserve food and skin.

Some smudge plants can also protect against negative thoughts. To fully benefit from smudge's protective and purifying power, leaves or resin were burned to produce smoke that was then fanned over the person or object, often using a feather fan. Some plants have specific healing properties, while others have more general powers.

You can burn smudge either by sprinkling the dried herbs onto hot coals or a hot stone, or by burning the dried herbs in a clay bowl or shell.

White sage is burned in ceremonies to ward off negative spirits and influences.

The leaves are highly valued for their aromatic properties and are used as a repellent for clothes moths or as an insecticide against mosquitoes. White sage can also be used in other ways.

Plains Indians cover the floor of the sweat lodge with white sage leaves, which are also used for inhalation through a bunch, or by rubbing the body with the leaves during the sweat lodge ritual.

Native Americans believed that the smoke of white sage made evil spirits sick, who fled as soon as the plant started to burn; while good spirits did not get sick and were not afraid of the smoke, they were even fond of it!
