📎 Note: Our white sage sticks, called smudge sticks or smudge bundles, are natural incense used in ceremonies, traditionally burned by Native Americans during the sweat lodge ritual. 

Increasingly, doctors and therapists are discovering the beneficial properties of this plant. Smudge bundles are used by many people to connect with the power of Mother Nature. 

The practice of burning herbs and resins likely dates back to the cave era; however, ceremonies to purify people, places, and objects with smoke continue today, not only to repel insects but also because the smoke from certain plants helps preserve food and skin.

Some smudges can also protect against negative thoughts. To fully enjoy the power of protection and purification, leaves or resin were burned to produce smoke that was fanned over the person or object, often using a feather fan.

Some plants have specific healing properties, while others have more general powers. 

You can burn the smudges either by sprinkling the dried herbs on hot coals or on a hot stone, or by burning the dried herbs in a clay bowl or in a shell.

White sage is burned during ceremonies to ward off spirits and negative influences. 

The leaves are highly valued for their aromatic properties and are used as a repellent for clothing moths or as an insecticide against mosquitoes. White sage can also be used in other ways.

 Plains Native Americans cover the floor of the sweat lodge with white sage leaves, which are also used for inhalation through a bouquet, or by rubbing the body with the leaves during the sweat lodge ritual. 

Native Americans believed that the smoke from white sage made evil spirits sick, who would flee as soon as the plant was set on fire; while good spirits did not fall ill and were not afraid of the smoke, they even enjoyed it!
