    Faluns are fossil-rich shelly sands formed in a warm, shallow sea that partially covered this region during the Miocene. This sea teemed with marine life: mollusks, corals, shark teeth, sea urchins, and other invertebrates.

    A fossil shell midden is a natural accumulation of fossilized marine mollusk shells. These middens often reflect rapid sedimentation in a marine environment rich in benthic fauna.
