📎 Information on minerals that react to ultraviolet (UV) light

Some stones and minerals have the particularity of reacting under ultraviolet (UV) light, a phenomenon called fluorescence.

When exposed to a UV lamp (short or long wavelength), they emit a visible light that is often spectacular: red, green, blue, orange or yellow.

This reaction is due to the presence of chemical elements or impurities (such as manganese, uranium, lead or certain rare earths) which absorb ultraviolet energy and re-emit it as colored light.

Among the minerals best known for their fluorescence are fluorite, calcite, sodalite, willemite, and even some diamonds. This phenomenon is highly valued by collectors and used in mineralogy to aid in the identification of specimens.

It does not alter the structure of the stone and is only visible under UV light, which adds a fascinating and sometimes surprising dimension to these natural treasures.

    📖 History and description

Melanophlogite is a rare mineral composed of silica (SiO₂), just like quartz, but possessing a different and particular crystalline structure.

Its name comes from the Greek words melas (black) and phlogistos (flammable), referring to the darkening it can exhibit when heated.

It was described in the 19th century, notably from samples discovered in Italy, in Sicily.

Melanophlogite typically forms in sedimentary or volcanic environments, often associated with sulfur deposits.

It is frequently found in association with native sulfur, which gives rise to highly sought-after pieces in collections: the translucent or whitish crystals of melanophlogite then contrast with the bright yellow of the sulfur.

This spectacular mineralogical association is particularly famous in Sicilian deposits.

Native sulfur, on the other hand, has been known since antiquity. Used in religious rites, ancient medicine and later in the manufacture of gunpowder, it forms mainly in volcanic areas or environments rich in sulfur gases.
