👉 Cut and polished, pallasites become very aesthetic and gain significant market value due to their rarity (1% of meteorite falls).

Pallasites are meteorites composed of automorphic or xenomorphic olivine crystals, embedded in an iron-nickel matrix where Widmanstätten figures are often found. Density: from 4.5 to 7.

Pallasites derive their name neither from the goddess Pallas Athena nor from the asteroid (2) Pallas, with which they have no connection, but from the Prussian zoologist and naturalist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811).

In 1772, Pallas learned of a 680-kilogram piece of metal found in 1749 in the Siberian mountains, relatively close to Krasnoyarsk (Russia). Pallas arranged for its transport to Saint Petersburg and studied it upon his return to the imperial capital.

Analysis shows that it is a new type of meteorite, named pallasite by Ernst Chladni in 1794 (the asteroid Pallas would not be discovered until 1802, after these meteorites had received their name).

The meteorite itself, initially designated as "iron of Pallas," is now called Krasnoyarsk meteorite.

The description made by Pallas allowed the German physicist Ernst Chladni to convince the scientific community that meteorites were indeed objects of extraterrestrial origin.

The metal/silicate assemblage of the "iron of Pallas" had no plausible relation to the rocks among which it was discovered, and instead resembled many other objects found elsewhere in the world.
