About: Moldavite is a glassy material that can form during an impact of a meteorite, as in the case of the moldavite from the Czech Republic, that of the Ries impact crater 14.4 million years ago. The link with the Ries has been proven by experiments on the age of these tektites and on projectiles subjected to strong acceleration. 

The impact melts the silicates which become glassy molten tektites, produced by the high temperature.

Geologists and crystallographers think that these tektites form in a few milliseconds, when the upper layer of the Earth's surface, molten, is ejected at a very high speed in billions of fragments that solidify into natural glasses of olive green to dark green hue.

Moldavite is mined and sold as an ornamental stone, cut and polished, sometimes under the name of chrysolite or pseudo-chrysolite.
