    👉 The musical principle of the Harmonium (also called Guide-Song) is the same as that of the accordion. It relies on the use of free brass reeds and a bellows that provides the air necessary for sound production.

    Depending on the model of the instrument, the sound comes from the vibration of one, two, or three rows of reeds.

    Currently, the Harmonium is widely used in India in popular, classical, and devotional music to accompany singing.

    The Harmoniums we offer are made in Calcutta and crafted from good quality dry wood.

    If you enjoy Indian mantra chants, then you are familiar with the sound of the Indian harmonium, which has an inimitable, enchanting sound color thanks to the warmth of the vibration of its brass reeds.

    It is an accessible instrument, one might say semi-intuitive, as it is played with one hand, while the other operates the bellows.

    The beauty and warmth of the instrument's timbre come from the famous material of the vibrating reeds: brass.

    Historically in the West, this material was used before it was replaced by steel reeds, which profoundly changed the timbre of instruments such as accordions.

    In a harmonium, pressing a key will trigger the vibration of one, two, or three reeds at the same time.

    This allows harmoniums to be classified into one voice, two voices, or three voices: One-voice harmoniums are not very reliable, so we will only refer to two-voice or three-voice Indian harmoniums.

    📎 Currently, in India and Pakistan, the harmonium is used in both schools, ashrams (spiritual hermitages), and most households (it is sometimes said that there is a harmonium in every Indian home).

    It is used to support both group devotional singing (kirtans) and solo devotional poems sung (bhajans) from the Hindustani tradition; and on the Muslim side, it enhances qawallis, hymns dedicated to Allah (for example, listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, very well-known in France).
